Dr Andrew Wakefield is in front of the General Medical Council today to defend himself against the charge of Serious Professional Misconduct in relation to a study he published in the Lancet in ‘98.

The study reported links between MMR and an increased risk of autism. The Lancet has since distanced itself from the paper.

Dr Wakefield is charged alongside two further colleagues, and the GMC will be focussing on irregularities in the research methods, rather than the actual safety of the jab.

If found guilty all three of the doctors will be struck off the medical register.
