New ‘Easy Access Guide’ for National Park

~ June 28th, 2008

Parents and Carers wanting to take their children out to the ‘Great Outdoors’ but worried about access issues can now access a fantastic new guide to the Brecon Beacons National Park in Wales. Written by the national park authority, with assistance from their disabled access group it promises to be a useful tool for all Parents and Carers.

The guide highlights easy access routes around the park for those who are unable to walk too far, or need to get around in a wheelchair or buggy.

The guide is available at the Information Centres in Llandovery, Abergavenny and Brecon.

Educational tool, likeable toy or totally unnecessary?

~ June 28th, 2008

There has been a real upsurge lately in disabled dolls. There are now dolls that have features of Downs Syndrome, dolls in wheelchairs, blind dolls and even dolls with prosthetic limbs.

Opinion appears to be largely divided about the usefulness of these dolls, and about whether children appreciate or need toys that reflect their own experience.

What do you think? Drop P&C a line and let us know how you feel about these dolls and whether you would ever buy one for your child.

Flexible working hours extended

~ May 16th, 2008

Good news for parents of children aged between 6 and 16 or who are not recognised as having a disability - the Government have announced that they will extend the right to request flexible working to all parents with a child under 16.

Employers are under no obligation to say yes, but should have a very good reason for refusal. At the moment 9 out of 10 requests are approved, so this is good news for a substantial number of people who already knew that children need their parents around beyond the age of 6!

The announcement has been welcomed by unions and parenting groups, and for once their hasn’t been too much complaining from the business community.
